The issue of the headscarf has come up once again, with the members of Campus Front of India staging a protest, outside St Agnes College in Mangaluru, on Monday.

The protesters condemned the college authorities for not allowing students to attend classes wearing a headscarf.

Campus Front of India State Committee member Riyaz said, “Colleges should respect every religion. The government should form rules and ensure that the row over headscarf does not return every academic year.” The protesters said that wearing a hijab is their right and dignity.”

Principal clarifies

St Agnes College principal Sr Jeswina said, “St Agnes College is a minority institution catering to women’s education in particular. We respect every student who chooses to study here. The management has framed rules and regulations to maintain order and discipline. Accordingly, the college rule states that the students are not permitted to wear headscarf inside the classroom only. However, we have no objection if they wear it outside. The students and their parents are aware of this rule before seeking admission in the college. Yet a few students have gone on a protest without even submitting a memorandum. If there are any issues with any student, the management will settle the matter with the students and their parents,” the principal said.
