‘Coordination among depts must while tackling distress’

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sindhu Rupesh emphasised on the need for co-ordination and a rapport among departments during the time of distress.

She was speaking at a programme organised by the State Disaster Management Centre in Udupi on Thursday.

Sindhu said any emergency can be handled when all the departments work with a sense of responsibility.

She said that the department should be working in tandem to tackle emergency and stressed on the implementation of Disaster Maintenance Act-2005 during emergency.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari said that there was a need to chalk out plans and work accordingly. The best practices to manage natural disasters more effectively is becoming an increasingly urgent global priority.

Effective disaster management or disaster response can be defined as providing the technology, tools and practices that enable disaster response organisations to systematically manage information from multiple sources and collaborate effectively to assist survivors, mitigate damage and help communities rebuild, she said. The disaster management expert Parameshwar G R said natural disasters were becoming more frequent and affecting more people than before.

The reasons vary from population growth to change in climate to habitation patterns, he added. As many as 45 officials from different departments participated in the programme.
