Deputy Commissioner Annies Kanmani Joy called upon the youth to inculcate values of Savita Maharshi and Madiwala Machideva.

Speaking during Savita Maharshi and Madiwala Machideva Jayanti organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture at Old Fort Hall in Madikeri on Tuesday, she said that Savita Maharshi and Madiwala Machideva lived in the 12th century and worked for the societal development. They believed and lived according to the ideology of ‘work is worship’ propagated by Basavanna, the social reformer.

“Everybody should contribute towards a good society through honest work,” said the deputy commissioner.

Saraswathi D.Ed College principal Srikumar said that both Savita Maharshi and Madiwala Machideva dealt with the work of cleanliness.

Savita Maharshi was the barber and the latter was a cloth washman. Though their works seem to be ordinary, they carried out their respective works with great devotion, which gives us a lesson that every work is dignified and deserves respect, he added.

Kannada Sahitya Parishat district president Lokesh Sagar, CMC president Kaveramma Somanna, Zilla Panchayat deputy secretary Guduru Bhimasena, Madiwala Samaja president Manjunath and Kannada and Culture Department assistant director K T Darshana were present.

Cultural programmes were held on the occasion.
