A Vision Group has prepared a draft report highlighting the Udupi district’s tourism potential for the next 10 years, Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha said.

The draft will be finalised after being approved by a committee, headed by District In-charge Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

The group has identified 104 tourist spots in the district and also areas that need to be developed in the next 10 years. PG students had also identified the amenities available in these 104 spots, the deputy commissioner said during ‘Connect 2021’, organised by Karnataka Tourism Society and Tourism Department, at Hotel Ocean Pearl, on Friday.

‘Self-sufficient’

Jagadeesha said Malpe Beach is a self-sufficient beach in Udupi. The revenue generated from the beach is being utilised for the development works. A Rs 6 crore proposal on widening the road leading to Blue Flag certified Padubidri Beach and developing an island located next to the beach was submitted to the government for approval. The centre will hand over Blue Flag Padubidri Beach to the district administration soon.

“The Blue Flag beach generates monthly revenue of Rs 6 to Rs 7 lakh and the expenditure is between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 11 lakh. The government should continue to maintain the beach for another year. After a year, the beach will become self-sufficient,” he promised.

Plans are afoot for the development of Someshwara and Maravanthe beaches and the state budget had announced Rs 20 crore, he added.

The government should announce a 50 per cent subsidy for boat houses instead of a 20 per cent subsidy. An expression of interest was invited for setting up of floating restaurants in Udupi. The proposal for a cable car between Kollur and Kodachandri needs to be taken forward, he added.
