The new year celebrations of Kodavas—Edamyar Ond—was celebrated on Sunday in the paddy field of Macchamada Ramesh, at Kayamkolli in T Shettigeri of South Kodagu.

By ploughing the land, the paddy cultivation was flagged off on the occasion.

Kodava Makkada Koota members and villagers placed rice at the house of Macchamada Ramesh and left for the paddy field. They offered puja to the plough and to Mother Earth.

Kodava Makkada Koota President Bollajira B Ayyappa flagged off the Edamyar Ond by ploughing the land.

Kodava community leader Bollajira B Ayyappa said, “Kodavas celebrate new year celebration on the day by ploughing the land. The day has its own significance. Now, the situation has changed. A pair of oxen are not used for ploughing. Without encouragement from the government, paddy fields have been left fallow.”

Rajya Raitha Sangha Kodagu district unit President Chimmangada Ganesh said, “The government is responsible for the paddy fields lying fallow in Kodagu district.”

Social worker Macchamada Somaiah released a book, ‘Kodagra Sepoy’, on the occasion.
