A woman passenger from Kasargod, Mohammed Ali Sameera, who was allegedly attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs 1.10 crore into the country, was arrested at Mangalore International Airport by the Customs officials on Thursday.

The detection of illegal gold is one of the biggest hauls in recent times, the Customs officials said.

Sameera, who arrived from Dubai by an Air India flight, had allegedly attempted to sneak past the Customs officers by concealing gold in the inner garments, sanitary pads and socks. The gold seized weighed around 2.41 Kg and was valued at Rs 1.10 crore.

She was also found carrying foreign origin cigarettes in violation of COPTA regulations. The cigarettes were also seized.

The Customs team, led by Mangalore Air Customs Deputy Commissioner Dr Kapil Gade, included Superintendent Preeti Suma, Rakesh Kumar and Kshiti Nayak.
