‘Hard work, self-confidence helped me clear UPSC’

Yashaswini B from Banooru in Kadur taluk has cleared the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination by securing the 293rd rank. This is her first attempt.

Yashaswini shares details on her preparations for the exam and her success story with DH.

When did you start dreaming of writing the UPSC examination?

The dream had begun while I was in SSLC. After completing my BE, I was clear on my aim. I started the preparations after completing my BE in 2017.

How were the preparations for the exam? Did you attend coaching?

I did not join for work after completing my BE. When I informed my parents on preparations for UPSC examination, they readily agreed for it.

I availed 10-months coaching at Vajiram & Ravi at New Delhi. The coaching helped to make my basics strong. Before joining the coaching, I studied NCERT textbooks from class 6 to 10. Apart from studying whatever was taught in the coaching institute, I was thoroughly following newspapers and magazines.

I revised whatever I learnt and was successful in my first attempt.

For how many months did you prepare for the exam?

One needs to work hard for a year. Hard work, systematic study and smart work will help attain success. I used to study for 12 to 14 hours daily.

What was your optional subject?

I had selected anthropology as my optional subject. I studied science in PU. As I had studied Biology in PU, I decided to take up anthropology for UPSC.

Who is your role model to take up the UPSC exam?

No one in my family had cleared the UPSC exam. None in my family had any knowledge of it to guide me. When I sought permission, my parents B S Basavarajappa and P V Indira readily agreed.

What are your suggestions for aspirants?

A degree holder with any background of arts, commerce, science and technology, engineering and medicine can write the UPSC examination. The aspirants should have the self-confidence to excel. One should not have negative thoughts on the English language. I studied in Kannada medium till the seventh standard.
