Minister for Urban Development and Housing U T Khader inaugurated the fifth Indira canteen at Pumpwell in Mangaluru on Tuesday.

The canteen is built at a cost of Rs 15 lakh. ‘Indira Canteen’ is aimed at serving food to the people at subsidised rates.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that Indira Canteen is useful for rickshaw drivers, daily wage labourers and students to have breakfast, lunch and dinner at an affordable rate.

He said the poor cannot afford to have food that costs more than Rs 50 in a hotel. The Indira canteen helps them to overcome hunger. Seventy-eight more Indira canteens will be completed under the guidance of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy in the state.

Indira Canteens have already been opened at State Bank, Kavoor, Urwa Store and Suratkal. Indira Canteens will come up at Ullal, BC Road, Beltangady, Sullia and Puttur as well.

MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said that the MCC has earmarked Rs 2.25 crore for the maintenance of Indira canteens.
