Mangaluru to get Doppler weather radar shortly

Mangaluru will soon have Doppler Weather Radar system which would accurately predict the weather.

Doppler radars will provide accurate information about thunderstorms, cyclone, storms, hailstorms, rainfall and wind pattern. With a radius of 250 nautical miles, they may help in issuing cyclonic predictions.

The Doppler weather radar system has already been installed at Mumbai and Kochi, said Meteorology Officer at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA), Ronald J Vaz.

Speaking to a section of media persons on the sidelines of a workshop on fisheries warning, he said that the Doppler weather radar is capable of predicting with increased accuracy weather events. A site has been identified for the installation of the Doppler weather radar system, he added.

In addition, the Meteorological Observatory Unit at Panambur would be shifted to Shakthinagar. The work is in progress, he said.
