Pioneer of green revolution remembered

The district administration, Zilla Panchayat and Social Welfare Department observed the 112th birth anniversary of former deputy prime minister Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram, at Old Fort Hall in Madikeri on Friday.

Deputy Commissioner Annies Kanmani Joy, Zilla Panchayat CEO K Lakshmi Priya paid their tributes to the great soul on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the dignitaries said that Babu Jagjivan Ram who was fondly referred to as ‘Babuji’, and he served the country in various capacities such as deputy prime minister, labour minister, defence minister and agriculture minister.

His decisions drew wide appreciation from the general public. He brought out a revolution in the agricultural sector to boost productivity. Babu was a freedom fighter and a devoted social worker, they added.

Zilla Panchayat deputy secretary Guduru Bhimasena, Social Welfare Department deputy director Bharati, district Health and Family Welfare minister Dr K Mohan, Agriculture Department joint director Mahanteshappa, ITDP officer C Shivakumar and taluk social welfare officer Chikkabasavaiah took part in the anniversary programme.

In Chikkamagaluru

In Chikkamagaluru, Deputy Commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautham said that the birth anniversaries and commemorations of great personalities are meant for the people of all communities.

Speaking during Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram’s 112th birth anniversary programme at Kuvempu Kala Mandira on Friday, he said that the ideologies of personalities like Babu Jagjivan Ram are not confined to a particular caste.

Their teachings should be followed by all. Babu Jagjivan Ram fought for social justice and strived to uplift the
living standards of agricultural labourers and peasants, he added.

The deputy commissioner added that Babu Jagjivan Ram paved the way for the green revolution in India.

Zilla Panchayat CEO S Ashwathi, Additional Superintendent of Police Shruthi, CMC Commissioner K Parameshi, taluk social welfare officer H D Revanna and retired lecturer B T Tipperudrappa were present.
