JOIN USIntermittent rain continued to lash Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on Friday. The rain that intensified on Thursday night continued till Friday noon.
A 21-year-old postgraduate student died on the spot after a compound wall of a temple collapsed on her at 11-Ulluru village in Byndoor on Friday.
According to police, the deceased has been identified as Dhanya K, a student of MSc in Statistics at Mangalore University. The incident occurred when she was returning after offering prayers at Jattigeshwara temple.
In the last 24 hours (ending 8 am on Friday), the district received an average of 42.9 mm rainfall. Mangaluru received the highest - 58.3 mm of rainfall followed by Bantwal—51.0 mm, Puttur—40.0 mm, Belthangady—33.7 mm and Sullia—31.7 mm.
The water level in rivers, rivulets and streams have increased with the continuous downpour.
The water level in river Nethravathi stood at 5.8 metres in Bantwal and 20 metres in Uppinangady while the water level in river Kumaradhara stood at 20 metres in Uppinangady.
The retaining wall of a vented dam partially collapsed at Bolmale-Bastikadu on Thursday night. The dam has been constructed across Panja rivulet.
Zilla Panchayat member S N Manmatha visited the spot and directed the Minor Irrigation Department officials to repair it immediately.
Dakshina Kannada district has received an average of 1708.4 mm rainfall from January till date. Last year, it was 1007.5 mm rainfall.
Belthangady taluk has received the highest of 1901.9 mm (1194.5mm last year) rain followed by Mangaluru—1850 mm (938.5 mm), Puttur —1634.2 mm (1008.2 mm), Bantwal —1633.6 mm (989.4 mm) and Sullia—1522.2mm (906.9 mm).
The normal average rainfall in the month of June in Dakshina Kannada is 941.8 mm. The district has received 266.6 mm more rainfall in the month of June.
Meanwhile, Udupi experienced drizzling throughout the day. The sky remained overcast in the district.
The vehicles on the national highway were compelled to use headlights even during day time, as thick rain clouds engulfed the district. Several houses have been partially damaged in Kundapur, Karkala and Udupi taluks following heavy rain on Thursday.
Houses have been damaged at Haladi, Hemmadi, Koteshwara in Kundapur taluk, Belanje, Kukandoor, Brahmavar, Bannadi, Shiriyara in Karkala taluk, Kadekaru, Udyavara and Manipura in Udupi taluk. In the last 24 hours, Kundapur received 61 mm rainfall followed by 51.1 mm in Udupi and 40.4 mm in Karkala taluks.
The flood in Sauparnika river in Byndoor has decreased. A few houses were inundated when a stormwater drain overflowed at Ulluru. The house of Nagesh Naik was surrounded by water on all the sides.
A bamboo tree fell on the road and disrupted the movement of vehicles for some time in Byndoor.
