Rehabilitation for prisoners released on good conduct

Last Updated 21 July 2018, 18:52 IST

The Karnataka Minorities Development Corporation Limited has initiated 'Mane-Malige' scheme to minority community members who served in jail and were released for good conduct, and to those acquitted from charges.

The rehabilitation scheme aims to get them into the mainstream. MLC Ivan D’Souza said on Saturday that the scheme is applicable to minorities who have lost their houses and businesses due to communal riots or natural calamities. It is also applicable to those charged under terrorist activities and booked under the Goonda Act and later acquitted by the court.

Under the scheme, the unit cost is Rs 5 lakh, of which, the government will provide a subsidy of Rs 2.50 lakh, and the remaining Rs 2.50 lakh will be given at 3% interest. There is a good demand for the scheme and the authorities have already received 850 applications in Dakshina Kannada district so far. The last date for submitting the applications is August 31.

The MLC urged Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to announce a Christian Development Corporation as promised in the Legislative Council during a budget discussion. He said the CM has approved in-principle to set up a Christian Development Corporation for the welfare of Christians in the state. The budget has already earmarked Rs 200 crore for the Christian Development Council. An additional Rs 100 crore should be given and the Corporation constituted.

"Up to 5,981 Christian students were given a loan of Rs 20.46 crore at 0% interest in the last four years. The government had promised employment to the students. As we failed to provide employment to these students, I urge the government to waive off the loan of Rs 20.46 crore given to the students,” he said.

"The coalition is ready for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao has fixed a target to win 20 seats out of 28,” he said.

The government will decide shortly on free bus pass for students, an announcement made in the last budget presented by former chief minister Siddaramaiah. "Transport minister has promised that KSRTC will pay 50% and the government is likely to pay 50% for the free bus passes. The MLAs from DK had pointed out that there were more private bus services and students would not benefit from the KSRTC pass. The system should be extended to private buses," he said.
