District In-charge Minister U T Khader said the water at the Thumbe dam will last until June 10, thanks to the rationing system implemented by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).

He told reporters on Saturday that the city did not face acute water shortage due to the rationing introduced by the authorities.

“Owing to the lack of such a rationing system, many towns and districts – including Udupi – was facing acute water shortage. MCC had engaged the services of 25 tankers to supply water to areas that did not receive water from the Thumbe vented dam,” said the minister.

More tankers

“I have directed them to engage services of additional 30 tankers to supply water. Officials were also directed that one tanker be engaged for each ward in the MCC,” he added.

Speaking further, Khader said that all the open wells in Mangaluru City Corporation limits have been cleaned. “All the 114 borewells were kept ready. The authorities have given permission to sink 15 additional borewells. In case of a need, measures will be taken to use water from private open wells as well,” he assured.

Quoting the weather prediction of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), that monsoon is likely to hit the coastal district in the first week of June, Khader said that the worst phase of the water crisis had passed.

‘Ready for help’

To a query on a group of unemployed youth facing difficulties in Kuwait, the minister said, “The issue has come to my notice. Mangalore South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath has contacted the youth. I have spoken to the legislator. There has been an increase in cases of youth getting cheated by private agencies in the pretext of offering employment in foreign countries.”

He advised the citizens to exercise caution in case of such agencies.

“In case the family members in Mangaluru submit a complaint in writing, then stringent action will be initiated against such agencies,” he promised.
