Mysuru city’s first flyover to open on Vijayadashami

After a long delay, the first flyover of the city, coming up on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) Circle at Hinkal, is likely to be opened for vehicular traffic on Vijayadashami on October 19.

The works are in the final stages and Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, who will be in the city for the final leg of Dasara celebrations, would inaugurate the new overbridge. The flyover, on the Mysuru-Bantwal National Highway, was expected to open before the commencement of the monsoon, but the construction works were delayed due to certain reasons.

The project was taken up by Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) in 2016 with funds from the Centre as well as the state government. The project aimed to ensure free flow of traffic and to ensure signal-free traffic at the junction.

MUDA Commissioner P S Kantharaju told DH that the contractor has assured of completing the works before Dasara. “Chief Minister Kumaraswamy will be in the city on Vijayadashami and we are planning to open the flyover on the same day. The programme is yet to be finalised. We will soon finalise the programme with the consent of the CM,” he said. Though the construction works were inaugurated in April 2016, it commenced only in June 2016. The Commissioner said, out of the total cost of the project, MUDA has provided Rs 13.25 crore for the flyover.

The total length of the new flyover is 510 metres, including ramps, and the width is 17.20 metres.

According to sources, the works were delayed due to the fixation of heavy pre-cast concrete blocks.

From the day the construction works commenced, traffic was hit on the stretch. A large number of vehicles, including heavy vehicles, buses and tourist vehicles, commute on the road. The NH connects major tourist spots such as Madikeri, Hassan and Chikkamagaluru. Even the vehicles bound for Dakshina Kannada use the NH.
