The e-library facility, introduced by the Department of Public Libraries at its branch in JP Nagar, has received an overwhelming response from the readers. The facility has recorded a steady increase in membership.

The Department of Libraries had introduced e-library facility at its JP Nagar branch a few years ago, to provide internet, browsing, and e-book facilities for the general public at an affordable cost.

There are more than 1,250 registered members in the library now. However, the general public can also utilise the facility at a cost of Rs 10 per hour. The e-library has been useful for the college students, residing in and around JP Nagar. They not only use the centre to enhance their knowledge but also file online applications for competitive exams and jobs. At a time, 10 people can have access to the systems installed at the centre. The library also provides internet browsing, access to e-books and e-journals through various websites. The library also has a printer, in case the students require photocopies.

Adarsh, a student of a private college said, the e-library facility provided in JP Nagar library is a boon for the students, especially who cannot afford to have a computer at home. Various books and digital information can be accessed in the library.

Speaking to DH, Deputy Director of Department of Libraries B Manjunath said, “The department has started e-library facility with the intention of providing internet facility to readers at an affordable cost. The e-library is also getting a good response from the readers. At present, the readers can access e-books and e-journals through websites. In future the department has plans to expand and provide an additional facility,” he said.
