Farmers fire WhatsApp salvo against HDK

Last Updated 10 July 2018, 18:29 IST

Farmers of Mandya district have turned tech savvy and are using the social media to vent their ire against Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy who failed to adhere to his promise of total farm loan waiver.

The video clippings of farmers expressing their disappointment over the Chief Minister are being widely circulated among WhatsApp groups.

The farmers claim that, “We voted for the JD(S), irrespective of the candidate, with the only hope that Kumaraswamy would waive off farm loans after coming to power. But, the CM waived the loans of farmers, who have failed to pay the interest, and has cheated real farmers”.

Around 10 such video clippings have turned viral on the social media like WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter.

It may be mentioned that Kumaraswamy’s announcement of farm loan waiver is limited to Rs 2 lakh during the budget, creating an uproar among the farming community.

A farmer from Malavalli said in the video clipping, “The people of all the seven Assembly constituencies of the district, who responded to the party’s slogan ‘Kumaranna Mukhyamantri’ and voted for the JD(S), are disappointed”.

A few farmers have alleged that the importance given to Hassan and Ramanagar has not been given to Mandya district.

Some have related caste and community for the CM’s decision.

A few have even used unparliamentary words to accuse Kumaraswamy on Facebook, drawing flak.

A farmer from KR Pet taluk in his video clipping said that, “We believed that the entire debt would be cleared as promised by Kumaraswamy within 24 hours of coming to power. If BJP’s B S Yeddyurappa had come to power, he would have at least waived farm loans up to Rs one lakh for all the farmers. Even the bank officials are not clear on the waiver. Kumaraswamy has cheated us”.

Another farmer said, “I did not even imagine that Kumaraswamy would cheat us. The chief minister has reduced the Annabhagya rice, distributed under PDS, by two kg. As the fuel
price has been increased, bus and auto fare will also increase. He has given the right gift to the sons of the soil.”
