Former MP C H Vijayashankar, who is the JD(S)-Congress coalition candidate in the recently held Lok Sabha election from Mysore-Kodagu constituency, said people consider both public and private life of a contestant, before casting votes.

Addressing a thanksgiving media conference post-polls here on Saturday, he said people expect minimum decency in a candidate of any party to cast their vote and also expressed confidence of winning the election.

He thanked all, including the district administration, for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the polls.“There were several aspirants in the Congress. I rejoined the Congress only recently from the BJP, after almost three decades. But once my candidature was announced, all Congress leaders and workers strove unitedly for me,” he said.

“Even the JD(S), our coalition partner, wanted the constituency for it to contest. But once it was decided that the Congress will field its candidate, the JD(S) leaders, including JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, Ministers G T Devegowda and Sa Ra Mahesh, extended their support to me,” he said.

“The officials of all departments, including the police, have systematically conducted the polls, in a peaceful manner, so as to uphold the dignity of democracy. People have participated in the polls actively. The percentage of votes cast has increased,” he said.
