Seers protest against 'step-motherly' attitude to N-K

An agitation led by seers of north Karnataka mutts against the 'step-motherly' attitude of the state government towards development in northern districts, was held in front of the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha (SVS) in Belagavi, on Tuesday.

Presumably, the cry for a separate north Karnataka state, remained covert in the protesters' hearts, but was not voiced out.

The protest commenced on time under the leadership of Belagavi seers including Dr Siddarama Swamiji of Rudrakshimath Naganur, Panchama Shivalingeshwar Swamiji Nidasosi. Over 50 other seers of various Veerashiva-Lingayat mutts participated in the symbolic protest.

The seers' protest call has garnered wide support. Several social and non-political organisations have also expressed their solidarity to the campaign.

The seers have also demanded the shifting of key departments to Suvarna Soudha, making it an alternative seat of power. They pointed out that currently, the edifice was merely a 10-day venue for the winter sessions of the legislature.

Shifting of secretariat-level offices to Belagavi, holding legislature committee meetings at SVS and naming Belagavi the second capital of the state --were the other demands.

But BJP State President B S Yeddyurappa visited the venue of the protest on Tuesday, to placate the seers and convince them to call off the agitation.

Belagavi also happens to be the divisional HQ comprising seven districts including Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri and Uttara Kannada.
