Nilekani suggests 'asynchronous' approach to GST

Last Updated 03 December 2015, 08:35 IST

Even as negotiations on the passing of the GST bill continues at the Centre, former Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani is of the opinion that it requires an “asynchronous” approach for all the states to be completely on board with the bill.

Speaking at the a panel discussion on the theme, 'Cooperative Federalism: From Rhetoric to Reality' here on Wednesday, Nilekani said: “All the states need to be given the choice of adopting the bill at their own pace and time. It requires a asynchronous approach rather than a synchronous one. It will other wise be very difficult for the Centre,” he said. The talk was organised by Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy.

Nilekani explained that any government at the Centre usually worked on the principle of providing “the carrot of money or the stick of legislation” when dealing with states.
