NKVV condemns Udhav Thackrey remarks on Belagavi

Last Updated 03 August 2018, 08:04 IST

North Karnataka Vikas Vedike (NKVV) convener Ashok Pujari came down heavily on Shiv Sena Chief Udhav Thackrey for the latter's statement that Karnataka would be committing contempt of court if it accorded second capital status to Belagavi as suit filed by Maharashtra in the Supreme Court regarding the Karnataka-Maharashtra boundary row was yet to be disposed off.

On Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's announcement that some government offices would be shifted to Suvarna Vidhan Soudha (SVS) and Belagavi would be accorded the second capital status, Thackrey had termed Kumaraswamy's decision as amounting to contempt of court. He had asked the Maharashtra government to file contempt proceedings in the Apex court.

"Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka. The need of the hour is the development of North Karnataka region and getting the status of second capital for Belagavi," he told reporters here on Friday.

The second capital status would end the boundary row. There should not be a debate on this and government should go ahead with its assurance to make Belagavi second capital, he urged.

"We've staged a protest before the SVS seeking government's attention in this regard. The state government has responded to the demands and we will wait for three months before taking next course of action," he said.
