Suspected Nipah cases in Sagar, Gadag

Suspected cases of Nipah virus have been reported from Gadag and Sagar in Shivamogga district.

Mithun, a native of Karemane village, who is suspected to have been infected is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Sagar. Sources in the Health department said Mithun complained of fever a few days ago after he returned home from Kerala. He was treated at the primary health centre at Shiravante village in the taluk. Mithun told doctors he had visited Kerala, where about 11 people died due to Nipah virus.

As a precautionary measure, the doctor sent the blood samples of Mithun to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for examination. The report is expected on the evening of May 25.

In Gadag, the district administration has decided to launch awareness campaigns after a man suspected to have contracted infection was admitted to GIMS hospital.

The man was working at Kozhikode, Kerala, and had recently returned to his native.

In Mangaluru, reports pertaining to two Nipah suspects in Dakshina Kannada district turned out to be negative, said DC Sasikanth Senthil.
