An email stating that vehicle registration numbers will be linked to Aadhaar and the registration would be cancelled if they are not linked, has sent people in a tizzy.
While the sender of the mail is “RTO department,” it quotes the Ministry of Home Affairs. However, the transport department has clarified that it had no idea of such a proposal and it had not received any such information fromthe ministry.
The department officials on Monday were busy clarifying to people who have received the email.
The email stated: “In a bid to improve road safety and make tracking of vehicle that violate rules easy, a panel set up by the ministry of home affairs (MHA) has suggested that a central body be set up to maintain data on motor vehicles by linking their registration numbers to the Aadhaar numbers of their owners...(sic)”.
V P Ikkeri, Transport Commissioner, said: “We are not insisting in linking Adhaar and we have not sent anything.”
Omkareshwari Puttabudhi, Joint Commissioner, e-Governance, said that
the email was only a suggestion from the Central government and the state government had not received any communication in this regard.
