No technical hurdles to IIT in  Dharwad , says DC

Dismissing the rumours that the proposed IIT in Karnataka could not be set up in the city due to technical reasons, Deputy Commissioner Rajendra Cholan, who is also the nodal officer for the IIT, has said that there are no roadblocks for setting up of premier institute.

On RTI reply that Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) had not handed over the 507 acres of land to the government, Cholan said it was only a matter of formality and the State government can ask the KIADB to hand over the land to it any time through a Cabinet decision.

“The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has accepted the recommendation and has conveyed the same to the Higher Education department of Karnataka. Now, the academic panel of the MHRD will hold a meeting and take a decision on when should the IIT start functioning. Once that is decided, the MHRD will inform the State government about the same. Then the State government will ask the KIADB to hand over the 507 acres of land to it. The KIADB will hand over the land to the government which in turn will decide in the cabinet that the land be allotted to IIT. The district administration will be asked to hand over the land to IIT. This is just a matter of procedure and there are no hurdles” he explained.

He also clarified that there have been instances of land acquired by KIADB being given for non-industrial purpose.

“The KIADB cannot directly give the land to non-industrial organisations. But the government will take the land from KIADB, pay for the land and then sanction it for non-industrial organisations. The airports in Hubballi, Mysuru and Belagavi have come up on land acquired by KIADB. The land in Hubballi has also been given to Infosys and Deshpande Foundation,” Cholan pointed out.

On the IIT bylaws stipulation that two IIT campuses should not be in the radius of less than 200 km, Cholan said, this stipulation applies to two IIT campuses within the same state.

Since Karnataka and Goa are two separate states though the distance between Panaji and Dharwad in 178 km, the stipulation does not come in the way of establishing IIT in Dharwad, he asserted.
