Poor visibility delays inaugural Chennai-Belagavi flight

Plane diverted to Bengaluru, returns after refuelling

Poor visibility delays inaugural Chennai-Belagavi flight
Poor visibility delayed the landing of the first flight on the Chennai-Belagavi route on Tuesday.

Spicejet, which is the only carrier operating services to Bengaluru and Mumbai from Belagavi, has launched the service to Chennai.

Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju had announced the services while inaugurating the new facilities at the upgraded airport last month. The first flight was scheduled to arrive from Chennai to Belagavi at 9 am.

The flight arrived, but could not land due to poor visibility.

The pilot took two to three rounds of the airport, while making efforts to land the flight from either end of the runway. After unsuccessful attempts, the pilot diverted the flight to Bengaluru.

The new flight has received overwhelming response from fliers.

The flight was filled to capacity. The authorities at the Belagavi airport had made all arrangements to accord the customary water cannon salute to the flight.

The flight finally made a safe landing at 12.24 pm after refuelling in Bengaluru.

After the traditional water cannon salute, travellers on board were greeted with flowers and sweets.

As per schedule, the daily flight from Chennai arrives in Belagavi at 9.05 am. It flies to Bengaluru at 9.25 am. The flight returns to Belagavi from Bengaluru at 6.55 pm and departs to Chennai at 7.15 pm. The carrier is offering subsidised fare on the route to attract fliers.
