Last Updated 14 February 2012, 18:31 IST

The assistant commissioner has directed the tahsildars of Madikeri, Virajpet and Somwarpet to take possession of agricultural lands purchased in violation of Karnataka Land Revenue Act.

Purchase of farm land in contravention of the Act has been established in 14 cases in the district (for the period 2005-10). According to the documents available with Deccan Herald, seven from outside the district, five from other states and two local people have purchased agricultural lands in violation of the Act.

Sections 79A and 79B of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act prohibit acquisition of land by certain persons.

No person other than the one cultivating the land personally is entitled to hold land, according to the Act.

Member of Legislative Council M C Nanaiah had written to the State government March last year expressing concern over unbridled construction of resorts and hotels in the district known for its verdant nature.

Accordingly, Undersecretary to the Government (Special Cell) and Additional Regional Commissioner, Mysore, investigated the matter and submitted a report.

The probe verified 1,833 sale/purchase transactions of land during the period 2005-2010 and found deviations in 26 cases.

The State government had asked the assistant commissioner to re-examine such cases.
