The deputy commissioner has written to the State Election Commission seeking permission for recounting of votes polled in the Bellary Lok Sabha election, on September 10.

The High Court of Karnataka had directed  recounting of votes following a petition alleging electoral malpractices. Chandragowda, the polling agent for Congress candidate N Y Hanumanthappa had filed the election petition.

J Shantha defeated N Y Hanumanthappa by a margin of 2,243 votes in the general elections held in April 2009.

Shantha moved the Supreme Court in appeal which upheld the order of the High Court. In its order passed on August 17, the apex court directed to take up recounting of votes within four weeks.

In view of apex court order, the Bellary district administration has made all the preparation for recounting of votes.

A A Biswas, the deputy commissioner, who is also the district returning officer, has sought the permission of the State Election Commission for the recounting.
