People found begging and undergoing treatment for long duration without any family support are being shifted to this centre about six km from the City.

The inmates, sheltered for a period of one year, are being given food three times a day, egg and banana three days a week. Chicken is also being provided of late. The inmates have no qualms on the quality of food.

However, the inmates sent out from the centre after the stipulated period, have started to return. “I was sent out from the centre on three occasions. But I have no where to go. I am happy her doing small chores,” said Javed, a 40-year-old man from Bihar.

Found begging at the railway station after being cheated for a job, Javed has been at the centre for the past three years. There are 80 inmates (74 men and six women) at the centre and most of them have similar tales. They adopt a clever strategy too; furnish wrong addresses of relatives to ensure that no one comes in their search.

Thirty-year-old Muttappa was brought to the centre after he was found begging near the district hospital. He claims himself to hail from Dharwad but doesn’t give address. The staff at the centre said whenever sent out Raju returns after two-three days.

Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas said the centre is only for the purpose of rehabilitating beggars. The objective is to ensure that destitutes reach their home. He said bringing food from outside has been prohibited in the wake of the recent incident at beggars’ home in Bangalore. The centre has recently been shifted to a building constructed at a cost of Rs 1.1 crore, recently.
