Showers cool parts of North Karnataka and coast

Heavy rain, accompanied by gusty wind, lashed Hubballi-Dharwad for around half-an-hour on Wednesday evening.

The sudden wind brought rain along with thunderstorm, which made pedestrians and bike riders to rush for cover. Some trees were uprooted and tree branches also fell, damaging electricity poles and lines, resulting in the disruption in power supply in some areas.

Showers accompanied by thunder, lightning and gusty wind lashed Kalaburagi district on Tuesday night at around
10 pm.

The district recorded an average rainfall of 2.2 mm in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Wednesday, according to Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre.

Kalaburagi taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 6.7 mm followed by Afzalpur—3.8 mm, Aland—3.4 mm, Jewargi—1.1, Chittapur—0.3 mm and Chincholi—0.1 mm. However, there was no rainfall in Sedam. There were no reports of any loss of property or lives in the district.

Rain also lashed Honnali, Channagiri and surrounding places in Davangere district.

Thunder claimed the life of a young man at Kanchikai village in Siddapur taluk in Uttara Kannada district. The incident occurred when Ganesh Chennaiah (170) was sleeping near an electricity switchboard.

Rain also lashed Gadag, Ron, Mulgund, Siddapur, Kumta and Gajendragad.

The interior areas in Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala taluks received rain. Pre-Monsoon rain and thundershowers have been lashing Udupi district for the last few days.

In the evening hours, moderate to heavy rain lashed Ajri, Amasebailu, Shiroor, Shankranarayana, Kamalasheele, Alur, Bijur, Hemmadi, Kambadakone, Navunda in Kundapur and Kabbinale, Sanoor, Mathyadi, Hebri, Shivapura, Tellar, Sooda, Belmannu, Kervashe and Kukkundur in Karkala taluk.

The month of May has been contributory in terms of pre-Monsoon rains for the district.

So much so that out of last five days, Udupi district has received rain on almost all the days at different intervals. The day was cloudy and other areas in the district also received drizzling during mid-day.
