Come Sunday, January 27, artists from across the country will descend on the Kumara Krupa Road to showcase their works at Chitra Santhe-2013, organised by the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath (CKP). The Santhe will be open from 9 am to 8 pm.
CKP administrator G S Narayanaswamy said that this being the 10th edition of the event, Chitra Santhe would feature a special exhibition of art works in the main galleries of the Parishath. “Over 100 artists/teachers from prominent art colleges in the State are expected to participate in the show entitled ‘Prof M S Nanjunda Rao Memorial Art Teachers’ Exhibition’.
The late Rao was a renowned art teacher and founder-secretary of the college of fine arts.
While the Santhe will conclude on Sunday, the special exhibition will be held for three days from January 26.
“On this occasion, our institute will honour 10 renowned art teachers and two art critics who have written exclusively on Karnataka art and artists in the last three decades,” Narayanaswamy said.
Dr R H Kulkarni, the Art History department, CKP, said the demand for space at the Santhe from artists across the country was growing by the year.
The Parishath has received more than 2,000 applications this year, he explained. “All applications are currently being scrutinised. We want to avoid duplication and re-copy works. It has been decided to increase the number of stalls to around 1,500 from the previous year’s 1,260. We have also acquired some extra road space for the day to accommodate additional slots,” he said.
While 60 per cent of the applications are from artists within the State, there is an increased demand for space from states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra this time. A couple of foreign artists (from the UK and the USA) settled in India have also filed their applications,” he said.
Accommodation
Sridhar, chief administrative officer, CKP, registered artists would be provided accommodation and food on the exhibition day.
“All that the artists have to pay is a registration fee of Rs 200. No commission will be charged on the paintings they sell at the Santhe. With the theme of ‘Art for All’, the Santhe is a direct sale of work of art by artists themselves. The aim is to make art affordable and available for all sections of society,” he said.
Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar is expected to inaugurate the Santhe. Former Union minister S M Krishna, the chairman of the CKP Trust, will participate in the proceedings. A light vehicle will be made available for senior citizens and children to move around the Santhe, the organisers said.
