SSLC result: Hassan springs surprise by topping list

Except for Mysuru, all districts in the region fared well in SSLC pass percentage. Certain districts climbed up the overall state result tally to occupy top places. But Hassan sprang a surprise by topping the state list.

As of a few years ago, Mysuru was always in the news because students from the city would secure top ranks.

However, this year, the district, which elected the Education Minister in the last government and Higher Education Minister in the present government, has slipped to the 17th place in a total ranking of 34 educational districts in the state.

Mysuru occupied the 11th place last year. The highest scorer (622) of Mysuru district was from Ideal Jawa School. Earlier, Marimallappa School and Sadvidya School would figure in the top rankings.

Surprise

The biggest surprise in the region was Hassan which topped the list with 89.33% SSLC pass percentage. Two Hassan city students-- Pragathi M Gowda and B Abhin of Vijaya High School stood second in the state by scoring 624 out of 625 marks.

Mandya district has also fared well.

It stands 10th in the state-wide ranking. It may be recalled that it was in the 28th place last year.

Chamarajanagar district, which gave the former education minister N Mahesh has also fared well by securing the 15th place (from 24th place last year). It may be recalled that Mahesh resigned in October 2018.

Efforts in Mysuru

It may be recalled that Mysuru district had secured the 21st position in 2016-17. With efforts by the Education Department, Zilla Panchayat it managed to secure the 11th position in the state last year.

Because Siddaramaiah (from Mysuru district) was chief minister (up to May 23, 2018) and his Education Minister Tanveer Sait was also from Mysuru, officials had launched several initiatives to improve results, last year.

In 2015, ‘Mysuru Guri Nooru’ was jointly launched by the Education Department and Zilla Panchayat to improve SSLC results.

This year (2018-19) too, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) made all efforts to improve the results and aimed to be in the top five places in state-wide SSLC result pass percentage ranking.

A meeting with the heads of all high schools was held to discuss the progress and set targets.

The Deputy Commissioner, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer and ZP Members were part of the meeting. The department held a workshop for teachers to improve teaching skills.

All schools were instructed to complete portions by December end. The revision was supposed to commence during January first week. A preparatory exam was conducted in February. However, the results were not to expectations. It is time for officials, people’s representatives and school managements to introspect if their efforts were genuine.
