State’s religious leaders split over Sabarimala issue

Pejawar Mutt seer Vishweshwara Theertha has said that he wants to remain neutral on the Sabarimala issue, that has created ripples across the country after two women entered the temple and had the darshan of the deity, in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters here, the seer said allowing women of all age groups into the temple will affect it as the Sabarimala tradition is different. “A few women are intentionally entering the temple. Hence, I prefer to remain neutral on the issue,” he said.

Commenting on the Ram Mandir issue, the seer said that it is not so important whether the BJP loses the elections or not in connection with the issue. But, it will be a huge setback to the Hindu Sanatana Dharma, he said.

The seer said the Union government should immediately consult constitutional and legal experts over the issue and announce its stand.

Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade said in Ujire (Dakshina Kannada) that there is nothing wrong about women entering temples.

In Udupi, Paryaya Palimar Mutt seer Vidyadheesha Theertha said the violation of spiritual and religious constitution should be stopped and the Supreme Court should reconsider its order.

Writer Chandrashekar Patil welcomed the entry of women into the Sabarimala temple.

BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa said Kerala government is systematically trying to meddle with centuries-old tradition. “The women were taken inside the temple with complete protection. This clearly speaks of a conspiracy. I appeal to the Kerala government to stop provoking people,” he added.
