When P Puttaswamy (58), husband of Puttalakshmi, died on January 16, she dutifully donated his body to JSS Medical College, as per his wishes. An educationist in his own right, Puttaswamy, who died following a brief illness, was the founder of Sir M Visvesvaraya School at Ittigegud.

He ran the school with the sole objective of imparting education to children from the poorer sections of society, without seeking any aid from the government. Puttaswamy worked relentlessly for the  welfare of these children, after taking voluntary retirement from service in HMT company in 2001.

The body of Puttalakshmi’s mother, Kempamma, too was donated to the same institution after she died in 2007, in keeping with her wishes.

The family members had vowed to donate their bodies in 2006, inspired by actor Lokesh, who donated his body.

Puttalakshmi believes one’s body must be put to good use even after death. Following her husband’s death, Puttalakshmi has involved herself in running the school which he lovingly nurtured.
