Work on upgrading the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway into a 10-lane expressway will be launched on January 8, Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy announced on Saturday.

Kumaraswamy, who held a meeting with officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Energy, PWD and Revenue departments, said all hurdles in widening the highway had been cleared and the ground-breaking ceremony would be held on December 8.

NHAI has divided the project into two packages – Bengaluru to Nidagatta (56 km) and Nidagatta to Mysuru (96.01 km).

The chief minister said 3,348 km of national highways in Chitradurga, Mangaluru, Kalaburagi, Ballari, Ramanagar and Tumakuru districts were being upgraded into four and six-lane roads.

He directed the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) officials to expedite the process of obtaining required clearances for acquisition of revenue and forest at the earliest. Kumaraswamy said 80% of land acquisition had been completed.

Kumaraswamy said work on upgrading the Tumakuru-Shivamogga, Byrapura- Challakere, Ballari-Byrapura and Challakere-Hiriyuru roads would be taken up on a warfooting.
