Senior Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa, the party nominee from Davangere Lok Sabha seat, on Thursday said he or his family members would not contest the elections.

Addressing the Congress party workers from the district at a meeting convened at his house in Bengaluru, Shamanur said that he had informed to KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao about his decision to back out.

He told the party workers that DCC president H B Manjappa would contest from Davangere and urged them to strive for his victory. Shamanur told DH, "I have backed out because of old age. The state leaders didn't give me ministership citing old age. Now they have issued me the ticket for Lok Sabha elections. S S Mallikarjun too will not contest parliamentary elections."

Meanwhile, KPCC chief Dinesh Gundu Rao has summoned ZP member Tejaswi Patel to Bengaluru to discuss his candidature.
