LS polls largely peaceful in Mysuru, Chamarajanagar

The polling in Mysore-Kodagu and Chamarajanagar segments, were largely peaceful. Except for some technical problems in a few Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), no untoward incident was reported.

While the BJP has fielded Pratap Simha and V Srinivas Prasad from Mysore-Kodagu and Chamarajanagar, Congress has fielded C H Vijayashankar and R Dhruvanarayan, respectively.

Though the polling was slow in urban areas in the morning, it picked up in the evening. There was a good response by rural voters from dawn to dusk.

EVM problem

There was a delay in voting due to technical problems in EVMs in some places. In Kollegal Assembly segment, the voting was delayed in five centres, due to technical issues in EVMs and VVPATs. However, the officials resolved the issues soon after.

In Mysuru district too, there was a delay in a few polling centres due to the issues in EVMs. The polling was stopped for nearly an hour due to technical problems in EVMs, at a station in Hosahundi. The officials replaced the system. The EVM was replaced in Nagarle polling station too.

Special booths

The Mysuru and Chamarajanagar District Election Offices had arranged specially booths such as Sakhi and tribal hut like centres, to attract the voters.

Dignitaries cast vote

CLP leader Siddaramaiah and his son Dr Yathindra, excised their franchise at Siddaramanahundi, under Varuna Assembly segment. Earlier, Siddaramaiah offered prayers at Siddarameshwara temple in the village. Siddaramaiah said that out of 14 segments, which went to the polls on Thursday, the Congress and the JD(S) candidates will win in 10.

Suttur Mutt head Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami and junior pontiff Jayarajendra Swami cast their votes at JSS College, on Ooty Road. Jayarajendra Swami cast his first vote.

Wadiyar vote

Members of the erstwhile royal family of Mysuru, Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar and his wife Trishika Kumari cast their votes in Mysuru.

Congress candidate in Chamarajanagar R Dhruvanarayan cast his vote at Heggavadi in Chamarajanagar. Similarly, Gundlupet MLA C S Niranjankumar cast his vote at Choudahalli and Hanur MLA R Narendra voted at Doddinduvadi. The MLAs were accompanied by their family members.

Similarly, Pratap Simha, along with his wife Arpitha, BJP leader Malavika Avinash, and MLAs S A Ramdas, L Nagendra, Tanveer Sait, cast their vote in Mysuru city.

Minister G T Devegowda along with his wife Lalitha, exercised his franchise in Gungral Chatra village, under Chamundeshwari segment.

Officer dies

An on-duty polling officer at a polling station (48) in Chamarajanagar, died of cardiac arrest. Shantamurthy (48), from Hanur in the district, is the deceased. Shantamurthy was an Economics lecture at GV Gowda PU College in Hanur.

Security

The police had made elaborate security arrangements across the constituencies and had also formed squads to monitor security. However, no major issues were reported across the two segments.

Poll boycott

The villagers of Doddane in Hanur taluk in Chamarajanagar boycotted the election, alleging lack of development of their village.

The villagers said that the village has no basic facilities. No voters participated in the election.

Similarly, several villagers of Chibukahalli in KR Nagar taluk, Mysuru district and Alur in Chamarajanagar taluk boycotted the election. 80% of the villagers of Chibukahalli boycotted voting, alleging lack of basic facilities in their village and several villagers of Alur too, refused to participate in the election.
