Rajnath in Bengaluru to enquire about A.Kumar's health

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh is travelling to Bengaluru today specifically to meet his ailing ministerial colleague H N Ananth Kumar, who is availing treatment in a city-based cancer hospital.

Kumar, who has been battling cancer, has been indisposed for the last five to six months.

The six-time Parliamentarian, who holds the Parliamentary Affairs and Chemicals and Fertilizers portfolios, was until recently undergoing treatment in London and New York.
He returned to Bengaluru only a few days ago.

Despite Kumar's prolonged absence from office, the Narendra Modi government has maintained a stoic silence over his illness.

Highly placed sources told DH that Singh's visit to Bengaluru too was unofficial and that he would return to New Delhi soon after calling on Kumar at the hospital.

Singh, who is scheduled to visit the hospital at 4 pm, is the first top BJP leader being allowed to meet Kumar.

His doctors have ordered strict visitation restrictions, allowing access only to his family members.

So far none of Kumar's party colleagues have been able to enquire after his health, which according to sources, has been deteriorating by the day.

The winter session of Parliament is likely to commence in the second week of December and Prime Minister Modi is yet to reallocate Kumar's portfolio.

Speculations are also rife that Kumar is unlikely to contest the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

He has held the Bengaluru South constituency six consecutive terms since 1996.

While Kumar’s office maintains that he will be back to work in a fortnight’s time, his associates assert that he will contest the Parliament elections.

Kumar's partymen are however doubtful. They feel that he might not have the energy to involve himself in electioneering activities as he used to in the past.

In the event Kumar refuses to contest the elections, the BJP is likely to field his wife, Tejwaswini. Tejaswini, who runs a charitable trust, Adamya Chetana, is a well-known face in the
constituency.

Kumar recently celebrated his 60th birthday.
