Truckers' strike: 6 lakh lorries halted in state

The indefinite lorry strike to protest against rising fuel prices and other issues entered its third day on Sunday.

Continuation of the strike in the coming days is likely to hit vegetable prices, which have already soared over the last two months. The transport department has set up control rooms to ensure that the supply of essentials is not affected.

Anand, director of Federation of Karnataka Lorry Owners' Association, said about six lakh trucks have stopped across the state. “Truckers are suffering a loss of Rs 200 crore per day because of the strike. At the same time, the government loses about Rs 500 crore every day. We will continue the strike till the government wakes up to our problems,” he said.

Many trucks plying from Mumbai, Delhi and other places in the north were stopped in Belagavi and Hubballi, reports said. The strike, if continued, is likely to have its maximum impact in the coming days.
