Karnataka legislature has set an example by appointing a transgender person as a permanent employee in the Legislative Council Secretariat.

Monish, who was working on a temporary basis so far, has been appointed as a permanent employee, Council’s Protem chairman Basavaraj Horatti said in Belagavi. He termed the decision a historic one.

The initiative has been taken to ensure gender equality, he added. Council secretary Mahalaxmi said there is no reservation for the third gender in job appointments.

But to set an example, it has been decided to regularise her service subject to the condition that a medical certificate and errors in her name are set right.

She was first given six months and has been accordingly appointed as a permanent employee in the first-of-its-kind case in the secretariat, Mahalaxmi said.
