Water levels in Belgaum rivers rise

Last Updated 25 July 2010, 16:35 IST

Water levels in River Krishna and its tributaries Doodhganga, Vedaganga, Hiranyakeshi and Ghataprabha continued to rise, but below the danger mark. Low-level bridges of Kallol-Yadur, Jatrat-Bhiwashi, Kardaga-Bedakihal, Sadalaga-Boragaon, Bhoj-Kunnur and Sidnal-Akkol are submerged forcing people to take alternative routes.

Though there was no release of water from Maharashtra dams, around 72,500 cusec water was flowing into the rivers from the catchment areas. All the 22 crest gates of Hipparagi barrage have been opened as a precautionary measure.

The district administration has already geared up to tackle any eventuality and has kept a round-the-clock vigil on flood-prone villages. Schools and colleges have declared holiday on Monday in Khanapur taluk following heavy rains and most of the nallahs and streams have sprung into life with force.

Water level in Linganamakki reservoir rose by 1.5 feet in past 24 hours owing to heavy rain in the catchment areas.

Water level in Linganamakki stood at 1,768.40 feet on Sunday against the full reservoir level of 1,819 feet. Inflow of 21,156 cusec was recorded here.
Yadur has received 138 mm rain, Hulikal 95 mm, Mani 94 mm, Mastikatte 88 mm, Agumbe 82.6 mm and 49.8 mm rain was recorded in Tirthahalli. Incessant rain was reported from Sagar, Sorab and Shimoga taluks also.
