Vocal prowess

Amidst the cacophony of modern music, Adele stands out with her vocal virtuosity. On February 10 this year, she won the Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance for her live version of Set Fire To The Rain. A little earlier, she made her mark with the theme song for James Bond film Skyfall.

Adele impresses with the heart-wrenching second album, Adele 21. Her first album, which was titled Adele 19, was released when she was 19. Although she is now 24, the songs for this album were written when she was 21, hence the name. The album draws on the singer’s personal experience. The opening song, Rolling In The Deep, has energetic vocals with bluesy gospel-tinged music.

Rumour Has It is an uptempo track with thumping percussion and infectious beats and cheeky lyrics. While Turning Tables is an overwhelming piano-assisted ballad showcasing Adele’s vocal talent, Don’t Your Remember is a memorable song with mellow verses and heartfelt chorus, to which a listener can empathise with the singer.

Set Fire To The Rain is mainly a pop track made acceptable with Adele’s smooth and sentimental voice. He Won’t Go is an R&B tune which allows the singer to give a soulful expression to her voice.

In the heavy gospel track Take It All, Adele displays her vocal prowess and all the rawness and huskiness at times. I’ll Be Waiting is an upbeat track, in which Adele sings of reuniting with a lost love. She is at her energetic and soulful best on the song One And Only. On this album, Adele also does a moving cover-version of Lovesong by The Cure. The album ends with the best number, Someone Like You, an enchanting piano ballad about coming to terms with a relationship that has failed.
