Apple secures patent for smart home security camera

Apple's new smart home camera is capable of scanning not just the face, but also the upper body to correctly identify the person.

Earlier this month, a report emerged that Apple is planning to foray into to smart home segment in 2025 with a new Internet-of-Things (IoT) hybrid device with an iPad-like display and a HomePod speaker.

Now, Apple has secured a new patent for a home security camera, reported Patently Apple, a community form that tracks Apple's applications at the United States Patent and Trade Office (USPTO).

As per Apple's sketch in the patent application, the new smart home camera is capable of scanning not just the face, but also the upper body to correctly identify the person.

It performs FaceID and BodyPrint scanning to register key physical attributes of the subject, particularly around the torso. The scanning will include multiple images and videos of the face and the torso.

Like the FaceID or TouchID scanning feature, it will be used to register members of the house. And, if the person standing in front of the camera is not registered, it will instantly send a notification to the owner or family members, to let them know there is an intruder or a guest has arrived at the door.

USPTO has granted new new smarthome camera paten to Apple.

Apple's FaceID is a gold standard for face-based biometric security systems on mobile phones in the Industry. The probability of a random person unlocking an iPhone using Face ID is approximately 1 in 1,000,000.

We expect Apple's latest patented technology for smart home cameras to have a similar accuracy rate.

In a related development, Apple is also planning to bring an all-new iPhone variant with a super slim profile, but racing against time to finalise the design.

Touted to be called as iPhone 17 Air, will come with just 5.5mm thickness. Apple engineers are working overtime doing permutations and combinations on where to put battery, thermal substrate (for efficient heat dissipation) and SIM card.

In all probability, Apple is expected to let go of the SIM card slot and the customer has to enrol for e-SIM to operate iPhone 17 Air.
