Google Maps gets Gemini AI-powered conversational search 'Ask Maps' feature

Google Maps is the most popular navigation application on all major platforms. It has registered 10 billion downloads and has more than two billion monthly active users globally.

Over the years, Google Maps has introduced innovative features, depending on the region. For instance, in 2023, it introduced Address Descriptors, an India-first feature that offers richer information on pinned locations. With Address Descriptors, Google Maps reduces the stress of navigating the complex streets of Indian cities and suburbs.

Also, it can notify users whether the destination is a narrow road, and alert users to get precise turns when joining a flyover.

Recently, the Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) partnered with Google to display authorised Aadhaar centres on Google Maps.

Now, the company has announced a new Gemini AI-powered conversational feature that makes searching for shops and restaurants less hassle on Google Maps.

Called 'Ask Maps', the users will be able to get the full description of the place and also the best time to visit. And, give a summary of the reviews. Users do not need to scroll through the reviews of the place listed on Google Maps.

To offer helpful tips and insights, Google Maps analyses information from over 300 million places, including reviews from the Google community of more than 500 million contributors globally.

For instance, you can ask, “I need to go to MG Road. Between driving down and taking a metro, what would be the best option at this time? Also, where can I pick up a coffee on the way?”

For this, Google Maps will offer clear directions, along with a comparison of driving and public transport based on traffic conditions and ETA, as well as convenient places to grab a coffee.

With Indian Premier League 2026 starting later this month, just before heading out, you can ask, “What are some places with good veg or non-veg appetisers where I can watch the live streaming of today’s match?”
