M5 Pro and M5 Max: Key aspects you should know about Apple’s latest silicon

Touted as the world’s fastest CPU core, Apple M5 Max and M5 Pro can clock 4.61 GHz CPU speed.

Apple on Tuesday launched the new MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max chipsets. The latter two come with big upgrades over the predecessor in terms of performance and power efficiency.

Apple says it has developed M5 Pro and M5 Max from scratch to smoothly handle the most advanced generative Artificial Intelligence (gen AI) Large Language Models and similar heavy-duty workloads.

M5 Pro and M5 Max: Here are key aspects you should know about Apple's powerful silicons

-- Both the M5 Pro and M5 Max feature an all-new Apple-designed Fusion Architecture. This innovative design combines two dies into a single system-on-chip (SoC) that includes a powerful CPU, a scalable GPU, a Media Engine, a unified memory controller, a Neural Engine, and Thunderbolt 5 capabilities.

-- The M5 Pro and M5 Max come with a new 18-core CPU architecture. It includes six of the highest-performing core designs, called super cores. Touted as the world’s fastest CPU core, they can clock 4.61 GHz speed.

Alongside these cores are 12 performance cores, optimised for power-efficient, multithreaded workloads. They can clock CPU speed anywhere between 3.00 GHz and 4.61 GHz.

--Collectively, the CPU significantly boosts performance by up to 30 per cent for heavy-duty workloads compared to the predecessors.

-- The GPU on M5 Max and M5 Pro can support up to 40-cores. And, each GPU core is integrated with a Neural Accelerator and higher unified memory bandwidth.

With this, M5 Pro and M5 Max will be able to deliver 4x the peak GPU compute performance for AI compared to the previous generation.

-- The GPU on M5 Max and M5 Pro promises up to 35 per cent improved graphics processing capabilities in apps using ray tracing than M4 Pro and M4 Max. They advanced visual effects and 3D rendering.

M5 Pro and M5 Max can handle complex computations and simulations by easily powering through massive datasets in apps like MATLAB.

Apple M5 Pro

-- The M5 Pro can be paired with the up-to-18-core CPU and 20-core GPU featuring a Neural Accelerator in each core. With four additional CPU cores compared to M4 Pro, the new CPU architecture in M5 Pro significantly boosts multithreaded performance by up to 30 per cent for heavy-duty workloads.

-- MacBooks with M5 Pro can support up to 64GB of unified memory with higher unified memory bandwidth up to 307GB/s. With all these features, M5 Pro delivers over 4x the peak GPU compute compared to M4 Pro, and over 6x the peak GPU compute than M1 Pro for AI performance.

-- M5 Pro has an enhanced shader core with second-generation dynamic caching and hardware-accelerated mesh shading. It promises to deliver significantly increased graphics performance — up to 20 per cent higher than M4 Pro and 2.2x higher than M1 Pro.

-- With Apple’s third-generation ray-tracing engine, M5 Pro provides up to a 35 per cent graphics uplift in apps using this rendering technique as compared to M4 Pro.

-- MacBook Pro with M5 Pro is best suited for engineers working on gen AI LLMs, data modellers (IT professionals), post-production sound designers, and STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) students.

With Apple’s third-generation ray-tracing engine in M5 Pro and M5 Max, users experience an up to 35 percent graphics uplift as compared to the previous generation when rendering intricate 3D designs with incredible detail.

Apple M5 Max

-- M5 Max chipset can be configured to up to an 18-core CPU and a 40-core GPU. The new CPU architecture offers up to 15 per cent higher multithreaded performance when compared to M4 Max.

-- MacBook with M5 Max supports up to 128GB of unified memory (RAM) with higher unified memory bandwidth up to 614GB/s. This bandwidth increase means users achieve incredible results when working with complex scenes, massive datasets, and higher token generation for LLMs.

-- M5 Max promises to deliver over 4x the peak GPU compute compared to the previous generation, and over 6x the peak GPU compute than M1 Max for AI performance.

-- The graphics performance for M5 Max is up to 20 percent higher than M4 Max and 2.2x higher than M1 Max. For gaming apps using ray tracing, M5 Max can provide a graphics uplift of up to 30 per cent more than M4 Max.
