Samsung Galaxy A57 5G review: Well-packaged phone

Recently, Samsung launched the new premium Galaxy A57 and A37 series mid-range phones in India.

The A57 is the top-end model among the two. It comes with two configurations-- 8GB RAM + 256GB and 12GB RAM + 256GB storage-- with prices starting at Rs 56,999.

Design, build quality and display

The device retains most of the design elements of the predecessor. It features a triple-camera sensor in a vertically aligned capsule in the top left corner.

. It comes with a glossy back cover and a flat rail on the side. It offers a good grip for the fingers to hold the device firmly,

Though the company doesn't offer a cover case, the device features an IP68 rating, meaning it can survive a drop in the swimming pool for close to 1.5 metres (around five feet) for up to 30 minutes.

Also, the front screen is protected by Corning's Gorilla Glass Victus+, capable of safeguarding it from scratches when kept in the close confines of a pant pocket with coins and keys.

. The Galaxy A57 sports a 6.7-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-O HDR Display with 120Hz refresh rate, up to 1900 nits peak brightness. It is good for consuming multimedia content indoors. But when outdoors with direct sunlight, the user has to get the screen up close to the chest level to view content clearly.

. The device houses dual-SIM slots, stereo speakers, a Type-C USB port and an in-display fingerprint sensor. The latter works fine without any issues.

. Performance

It is powered by a 4nm class 2.9GHz Exynos 1680 octa-core processor with AMD Xclipse 550 GPU, Android 16-based Samsung One UI 8.5, 8GB / 12GB RAM, and 256GB internal storage.

The device can handle all tasks smoothly support most of the popular games available on the Google Play Store. Also, it runs generative Artificial Intelligence apps and photography tools without any lag-ness as such.

. Outdoors with summer heat, the Galaxy A57, like any other phone in the market, tends to get warmed up during video recording or playing graphics-rich games.

The device runs Android 16-based OneUI 8.5 update. It has a familiar user interface, very easy to navigate through the settings. But it has a lot of third-party apps. Thankfully, you can remove them and make space for your favourite apps, and store new images and videos captured on the camera.

The device is guaranteed to get six years of Android OS updates and security patches for protection against cyber threats up to 2032.

With a 5,000mAh battery, it delivers a full day under normal usage. It supports 45W fast charging capability.

. Photography

The Galaxy A57 comes with a triple-camera module--main 50MP (with f/1.8 aperture, OIS: Optical Image Stabilisation), 12MP ultra-wide angle camera (with f/2.2 aperture), and 5MP (f/2.4) macro sensor with LED flash on the back.

. The device does a really good job of capturing photos with sharp details in natural sunlight.

. Even during the evening time and at night, the Galaxy A57 works excellently to deliver vibrant pictures and ensure there is less noise in the frame.

. With portrait mode, the device neatly captures the subject sharply and artfully blurs the background to get the bokeh effect.

. On the front, it features a 12MP (f/2.2) camera. The device takes pretty decent selfies and videos.

. Also, it offers several beauty tools and filters to make the face photogenic and can be shared on social media platforms.

. Final thoughts

Samsung's Galaxy A57 is a decent mid-range phone with a moderate upgrade over the predecessor. Considering the overall aspects, it is a well-packaged phone, but a bit too expensive.

. The launch price is way higher than its predecessor ( Galaxy A56 review) , which started at Rs 41,999. But it is the case with almost all brands in the industry. Due to high demand for RAM and storage chipsets for AI data centres, semiconductor majors have prioritised their supply to them.

It comes in two configurations-- 8GB RAM + 256GB and 12GB RAM + 256GB storage-- for Rs 56,999 and Rs 62,499, respectively.
