‘Tipu fought against colonial power’

Last Updated 01 December 2018, 12:23 IST

Tenkanidiyur PU College associate professor Dr Jayaprakash Shetty said that Tipu Sultan should be respected for his fight against the colonial power.

Delivering a talk on Tipu, as part of Tipu Jayanti celebrations, organised jointly by the district administration and zilla panchayat, the scholar said that most royals had to wage a war to safeguard their interests and territory. Tipu was no different. There might have been several deaths that took place in the process of wars waged by Tipu. Despite all these factors, Tipu stands out for his fights and sacrifices he made to retain his territory against the British. He was a supreme commander.

He was also a social reformer who stood against the evil practices of traditional Hinduism, wherein the girls of backward communities were not permitted to cover their bodies.

Deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis inaugurated the celebrations.

Around 100 police personnel were deployed around the venue of the programme to ensure that no untoward incidents occur. One KSRP and two DAR platoons deployed. The police arrested 15 Bajrang Dal activists who tried to enter the venue by shouting slogans against the state government and Tipu.
