Foreign education system of applying theories and skills to practice would not be relevant on all occasions in the Indian context. Therefore there is a need to adapt practice-based theory instead of implementing the theory-based practice, Tumkur University Vice chancellor Prof Y S Siddegowda said.

He was speaking after inaugurating ‘Spandana’, the national social work conference at Roshni Nilaya School of social work on Thursday.

Theories of social science cannot be formulated within four walls. All good old theories need not always be subscribed to, as the place of origin and the place of implementation of these theories could be different, Siddegowda pointed out and said that theories should be adapted on the basis of indigenous experiences.

He stated that social workers have a vital role to play in method practicing, which deals with the adaptation and application of social science theories in the present scenario of eroding value system in society.

He also suggested that students should carry out realistic fieldwork.

“Field-based studies is expected to bring professionalism, voluntarism, and maturity among students.”

Tumkur university vice chancellor felt the need to introduce a two-year course soon after class twelfth, so that students could get a glimpse of the subject.

Bharathiar Dasan University, Coimbatore former Dean P Ilango delivered a keynote address. Roshni Nilaya School of social work principal Juliet C J and organising secretary Asha Lobo were present.
