Victim of natural calamity ends life

A farmer rendered landless and homeless by the natural calamity ended his life by committing suicide.

N B Charan (30) from Jodupala is the deceased. He had lost his house and agricultural land during the floods. He took the extreme step on January 11, by consuming poison.

He was shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru after the administration of first aid in the district hospital. However, he did not respond to the treatment and breathed his last on January 12.

A case was registered in Madikeri rural police station. Charan owned agricultural land in Monnangeri, where he had grown coffee and arecanut. Along with his land, his house which was built after spending lakhs of rupees was washed away in the floods, said a family member.

"He had liabilities exceeding Rs 3 lakh and he was unable to repay the amount. The illness of his mother had furthered burdened his family and pushed him into depression," the family member added.
