Work to clear boulders on Shiradi Ghat underway

Construction of temporary retaining wall in progress on Shiradi Ghat stretch.

The work on clearing the soil and boulders fallen on Shiradi Ghat stretch on NH 75, is in progress.

The work on constructing a temporary retaining wall beside the stream on one side of the road is also being taken up by the labourers.

Heavy rain in the last three months saw landslides on multiple locations on Shiradi Ghat. The landslides have brought down several trees along with it. The work on clearing the uprooted trees are in progress from Gundya to Maranahalli.

The soil and boulders fallen on the road at Doddatappalu near Donigal 10 days ago are yet to be cleared.

The retaining wall has collapsed on three places from Gundya to Kempuhole. The work on constructing the retaining walls are in progress.

Officials said, “Gundya stream flows beside the highway on Shiradi Ghat. Once the water level in the stream recedes, the work on the permanent retaining wall can be taken up. There is a need to construct a pillar and then take up the work on retaining wall.”

NH Superintending Engineer Raghavan said “I have inspected the stretch. There are a few dangerous spots following landslides. Along with the movement of vehicles, the safety of the motorists is also important. A report has been submitted to the Chief Engineer. The decision on allowing light vehicles will be taken by the Chief Engineer.”

Demanding to allow light vehicles on Shiradi Ghat stretch, the villagers from in and around Shiradi will organise “Shiradi Ghat Rastheya Satya darshana” on Monday.

In a meeting held under the presidentship of Malnadu Janahitha Rakshana Samithi Convener Kishore Shiradi, it was decided to take out a padayatra from Gundya to Kempuhole.

There is a conspiracy behind the closure of the Shiradi Ghat Road. There is a need to bring out the truth, he said.
