'Wannabe dictators wear out their welcome': US Democrats cheer defeat of Trump-ally Viktor Orban

As Hungary celebrated the results, the Democates in the United States hailed Orban's loss amid mixed reactions from President ⁠Donald Trump's Republican colleagues.

Hungary saw a historic change in regime on Sunday, after Prime Minister Viktor Orban conceded defeat, concluding his 16 years in office, as citizens voted for a pro-EU path led by Peter Magyar.

As the country celebrated the election results, the Democrats in the United States hailed Orban's loss amid mixed reactions from President ⁠Donald Trump's Republican colleagues.

"Pay attention, Donald Trump. Wannabe dictators wear out their welcome," Senate Minority ⁠Leader Chuck Schumer ‌said, stating "November 2026 can't come soon enough."

Former President Barack Obama took to X saying the victory was "a testament to the resilience and determination of the Hungarian people."

"The victory of the opposition in Hungary yesterday, like the Polish election in 2023, is a victory for democracy, not just in Europe but around the world. Most of all, it’s a testament to the resilience and determination of the Hungarian people – and a reminder to all of us to keep striving for fairness, equality and the rule of law," the post read.

"Far-right authoritarian Viktor Orban has lost the election. Trump sycophants and MAGA extremists in Congress are up next in November," said US ‌House of Representatives Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Wicker, a Mississippi Republican ‌who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the results ‌showed that Hungary's population rejected "the malign influence of Vladimir Putin" and "decided their ‌own future."

But a few allies of Orban, such as billionaire Elon Musk, mourned the ⁠result.

"Soros Organization ⁠has taken over Hungary," Musk wrote on his X social media platform.

The comment referenced to Democratic donor George Soros, who is a Hungarian immigrant to the United States and has long been verbally targetted by many conservatives.

Earlier, Politico reported that Trump promised to give economic backing to Hungary if required by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, reiterating his support for the Hungarian leader just hours ahead of a crucial election in the country.

Trump himself did not bring up the Hungarian elections on Sunday, even ‌as he stated his opinions on matters through social media posts, a television interview and a brief gathering with reporters.
