Malaysian religious judge charged with 'Khalwat'

Adam Tumiran, 43, a judge at the Penang Shariah High Court and his friend Nurul Izani, 34, a financial adviser pleaded not guilty in a Lower Court today to committing offence of close proximity at a government quarters here last December, national news agency Bernama said.

The lower court judge allowed the two to be released on bail of RM 2,000 or 30000 rupees in one surety each. If found guilty, they could be fined not exceeding RM 3,000 each or a maximum of two years' imprisonment or both.

It is forbidden for Muslims in Malaysia to be in close proximity with members of the opposite sex in a closed room without being married.
